DIY Office Wi-Fi

How to Set Up a Reliable Network Without the Headache

Wi-Fi woes can turn a productive day into a hair-pulling mess. Here’s how small and new businesses can set up a solid office network—without calling in the cavalry (unless you want to, of course).

1. Start With the Right Router

Don’t settle for the bargain bin special. Invest in a decent business-grade router. It’ll handle more devices and offer better security.

2. Location, Location, Location

Put your router in a central spot, up off the floor, and away from walls or metal cabinets. The fewer obstacles, the better your signal.

3. Secure Your Network

Change the default Wi-Fi name and password. Use WPA2 or WPA3 encryption. Don’t give your network a name like “Free Wi-Fi”—unless you want unwanted guests!

4. Separate Guest Access

Set up a guest network for visitors. That way, your business data stays safe (and your main Wi-Fi doesn’t get clogged).

5. Test and Tweak

Walk around your space with a laptop or phone and check for dead zones. If you find any, consider a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system.
